I have long had a suspicion that purging of deletion stubs fails when the number of documents plus the number of stubs gets too high -somewhere in the range of two to three million. I became suspicious about this while working with some code that uses the C API to purge stubs, I found that the API call SFDbGetModifiedNoteTable will get an error "Unable to extend an ID table - insufficient memory" in such cases, and IIRC this call is the same one used in the Notes C API sample code for working with stubs.
I never got definitive proof that the same issue that affected the code I was working with is present in the Domino server's routines for purging stubs, but I've never seen proof that it isn't either.
